The term "pet-friendly" can mean a lot of things to different people. When a hotel or other lodging advertises themselves as pet-friendly, it means that they will allow pets - although restrictions may apply. Travelers with pets should always remember to confirm pet policies before booking. An accommodation's "pet-friendly" policy can change for several reasons, including new management. Generally, an accommodation with a pet-friendly policy will allow small dogs. If you're traveling with anything other than a dog; traveling with large dogs (or in some cases, even medium-sized dogs); or traveling with more than two dogs... you're going to find it more of a challenge to find a pet-friendly lodging that can accommodate your animal family. Be flexible - look for pet-friendly cottages, cabins, and B&B;s in addition to pet-friendly hotels and resorts. All pet-friendly accommodations will have restrictions, some more than others. Some of the more common pet restrictions include: Dogs only. Maximum number of pets per room (usually 1 or 2). Size restrictions, eg. "dogs under 50 lbs". Pets cannot be left unattended in guest rooms. Pets are allowed only in specific pet-friendly rooms. Pets are not permitted in common areas such as restaurants, pools, etc. Pets must be leashed while on hotel property. And - this should go without saying! - guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Travelers should be aware that most pet-friendly lodgings will charge an additional pet fee. This could be a per day charge or a per stay charge; and it might be flat-rate for all the pets you bring, or it might be per pet. Be sure you ask for details on pet-friendly policies so that you aren't surprised when you're presented with the bill.
